Oratorical Contest

Topic for the 2016-2017 School Year is: “What the World Gains from Optimism.”

This is a great opportunity for students to practice and refine their speakingad writing skills. The 2016-17 Oratorical Contest is a combined gender contest, boys and girls competing in a single contest. The Oratorical Contest is open to students under 18 as of October 1, 2016 and who are educated in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. Students are required to prepare a 4- to 5-minute speech on a pre-assigned topic. This contest is designed to assist youth in gaining public speaking experience and provide them with an opportunity to compete for a scholarship.  There are no minimum age or grade level requirements.

First conducted in 1928, this is the second most popular Optimist International Program. Nearly 2,000 clubs participate in this program each year.  The Optimist Oratorical Contest gives youngsters the chance to speak to the world. More than $150,000 in college scholarships funded by the Optimist International Foundations is awarded annually from this program.

  • Windsor Optimist Club Oratorical Competion: (Top 2 proceed to zone competition)
    • Date:  03/16/2017
    • Time:  530pm
    • Location:  Poudre Valley REA, 7649 REA Pkwy Windsor CO 80528
    • Students that attend school in the Weld RE-4 School Dsitrct
    • Top two competitors move on to zone competition.
      • Generally consists of the top male and top female competitor.
  • Colorado/Wyoming District Zone 1 Competition:
    • Date:  04/06/2017
    • Time:  630pm
    • Location:  TPoudre Valley REA, 7649 REA Pkwy Windsor CO 80528
  • Colorado/Wyoming District Finals: ($2,500 scholarship awarded to
    • Date:  Saturday April 29, 2017
    • Time:  To be announced at a later time.
    • Location:  All Saints Lutheran Church at 15625 East Iliff Ave., Aurora, CO 80013
    • Winner of the district final will move onto a regional United States Competition.
  • Optimist International Regional/World Championship Contests:
    • Dates:  June 15th-16th, 2017
    • Location:  St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri.
    • Regional United States Winner will recieve a $5,000 scholarship.
    • scholarships in the amounts of $15,000, $10,000,
      $5,000 will be given to winners of the first, second, and third place World
      Champions, respectively.
